Indirect Economic Impacts of Hazards

Workflow

This project comprehensively examines the impact of damage to buildings and the transportation network in the Bay Area. It quantifies the indirect economic consequences caused by downtime in buildings and transportation systems, including railways, ports, and airports.

Building Inventory

Using BRAILS, a platform developed by SimCenter, and supplemented with various data sources such as tax databases, the National Structure Inventory, and Microsoft Building Footprint, a comprehensive building inventory for the Bay Area comprising 1.5 million structures has been established.

Building Damage

Using simulated earthquakes generated with ShakeMap, computational resources from DesignSafe, and open-source codes developed by SimCenter, building damage information can be assessed, and recovery curves can be generated.
